New diseases following crossover recombination between plant viruses

Read the paper this animation is based on: https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0198228 Vegetable crops suffer from new diseases caused by emergent viruses. Where do these emerging viruses come from? Part is due to increasing traffic of people and goods. However, we recently found evidence of viral evolution including genomic recombination between different species, enabling the newly recombinant virus to invade successfully new regions and crops species and outcompete a native virus.
