Environmental Screening Cannabis Case Study: Key to Microbial Testing Success

from Analytical Cannabis

Microbial contamination during Cannabis cultivation is a known issue that is likely to get worse before it gets better, as cultivators try to increase the size of their grows without taking precautions against what has generally occurred in the evolution of larger scale agriculture; need for the use of pesticides or other measures to decrease mold and bacterial colonization pathogenic to humans, as well as specific plant pathogens that have the potential to destroy crops themselves (various plant pathogens like Botrytis or DNA and RNA viruses like hemp mosaic virus). Often screening the cultivator center can identify hotspots for microbial or viral contamination can help avoid potential pitfalls associated with increased grow sizes. A case study will be presented, from one of the Steep Hill Licensee's, in which a cultivator went from failing regularly, to cleaning the grow area using environmental screening (PDX-ES) and having regularly passing batches, to failing again, after cessation of the internal screening process.
