Can I get UPLC or UHPLC performance on an HPLC system? | Trust your Science 10

from Waters Corporation

Can I improve lab efficiency by purchasing modern columns, but using them on older HPLC equipment? Will using smaller particle columns on older systems get ultra performance? What about solid-core column materials, will using them increase efficiency? Liquid chromatography column technology has come a long way over the years. The once-traditional 4.6-mm internal diameter (i.d.) column packed with 5-µm particles are being replaced with smaller i.d. columns (2.1 mm) packed with smaller, sub-2-µm particles due to increased column efficiency. Claims have been made that you can obtain gains in efficiency by simply utilizing a high-efficiency column on your existing HPLC system. In this episode of Trust your Science, Kim and Jon take a look at using narrow bore, high-efficiency columns on HPLC, UHPLC, and UPLC systems and see what impact, if any, these systems have on efficiency.
