  • Biopharmaceutical process development relies heavily on experimentation and previous experience expressed as “rules of thumb” and empirical correlations. Modeling of unit operations can assist process development by guiding experimentation, investigating sensitivity to process parameters, providing a quantitative measure of process robustness and increase overall process knowledge. As an example of a model-assisted approach the purification of mAbs by ion exchange chromatography using salt and pH gradients will be discussed.
