The Institute for Laboratory Automation (ILA) is undertaking a new program designed to help schools address the growing complexity of scientific work. While the concepts underlying the science are demanding, the tools used in carrying out the work are rapidly becoming more complex. Electronic Lab Notebooks, Laboratory Information Management Systems, Instrument Data Systems and other technologies are common place in modern labs but absent from most educational programs. The key is to bridge the gap between science as it is taught, and science as it is practiced. The science is the same, the tools are different, and students need to be acquainted with modern tools and technologies. The ILA is working to help schools incorporate an understanding of these technologies into their programs. Please view our web pages at http://InstituteLabAuto.org/academic/ for more details.
