Speaking at The Science of Cannabis Cultivation Online Symposium in December 2021, Brian Smith, PhD, CEO & Chief Technical Officer of Big Sur Scientific presented a method of analyzing cannabinoids in cannabis biomass by mid-infrared spectroscopy. Abstract: Cannabis growers need to do their own potency and terpene testing to know when to harvest, stay compliant, and optimize grows. Existing technology for this purpose is slow, expensive, and difficult to use. We have used mid-infrared spectroscopy to accurately measure cannabinoid and terpene profiles in dried, ground marijuana and hemp plant material. There is little sample preparation, the analyzer features push button operation so anyone can use it, the unit produces results in 2 minutes, and is field portable. How the analyzer is calibrated and validated will be discussed, and peer reviewed accuracy data will be presented.
