The legal status of cannabis in the United States is evolving at a rapid pace, along with its public perception. Although cannabis is a Schedule I controlled substance under federal law, a majority of states, including California, have adopted and implemented medical and/or adult use laws that legalize its cultivation, manufacture, sale and use to varying degrees. In addition, certain cannabinoids (including cannabidiol or CBD) have potential medical and therapeutic uses and have been approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration as ingredients in drugs. This presentation will provide an overview of the legal considerations faced by businesses in the cannabis space, using California as its state-level focal point.
