Dr Diane McCarthy presents a webinar on the principles and practice of biomarker discovery studies using surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization (SELDI) technology, a powerful technique combining chromatography and mass spectrometry for the analysis of proteins and peptides. Bio-Rad's ProteinChip® arrays are available with a variety of chromatographic, reactive, or matrix-prepared surfaces for analyses in a wide range of matrix types including cell and tissue lysates, culture media, serum or plasma, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Dr McCarthy discusses the issues involved in the implementation of biomarker studies in all phases including study design, discovery, validation, purification and identification, and assay development. She concludes with two examples of studies conducted in her lab, one investigating biomarkers of benzene exposure and another involving Alzheimer’s markers in CSF.
