Vegetable crops suffer from new diseases caused by emergent viruses. Where do these emerging viruses come from? Part is due to increasing traffic of people and goods. However, we recently found evidence of viral evolution including genomic recombination between different species, enabling the newly recombinant virus to invade successfully new regions and crops species and outcompete a native virus.

New diseases following crossover recombination between plant viruses

WisePocket proposes an integrated mobile app platform providing Health Care Organizations a customizable framework to build and quickly deploy online and offline mHealth apps for (i) citizen-care focused campaigns, for health behavior change, (ii) health system-focused campaigns, for reporting and data collection, and (iii) population health-focused campaigns, including awareness and campaigns testing. WisePoecket has been developed within an inter-University collaboration project, supported by VLIR, and involving Universidad Oriente, Cuba and Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium.

We are researchers at Newcastle University developing effective, home-delivered, play-based interventions to improve hand function in hemiplegic cerebral palsy and after perinatal stroke.

Perinatal stroke is the leading cause of hemiplegic cerebral palsy (HCP).  HCP often leads to difficulties with bimanual tasks and can severely impair independence, since many activities of daily living require skilful bimanual dexterity.

We have recently developed a parent-delivered therapy approach for babies in the first 6 months of life affected by perinatal stroke.
