[b]What is a Density Gradient Column?[/b] Density gradient columns can be used to determine the density of solid samples which are too small to be measured by pyknometry or hydrostatic weighing. A density gradient column is normally made in a glass tube between 750 and 1500 mm long and 35 to 60 mm diameter. It is mounted vertically in a water bath, and held at a constant temperature. The gradient is filled by mixing two miscible liquids, in constantly varying proportions as the column is filled. Density Gradient Column Floats Once the gradient has been formed, calibrated floats are lowered into the column. These will slowly sink until each reaches liquid of its own density. This allows a relationship for height up the column against density to be determined. [b]Quality Calibrated Glass Floats[/b] H&D Fitzgerald’s calibrated Glass Floats are manufactured to the highest specifications and are calibrated traceably to recognised national standards of mass, density and temperature. Features: • Density range 700 to 2300 kg/m3 at 23°c. You specify the density, we make the float! • Unique identification number fused inside the glass to allow floats to be easily distinguished from each other. • Standard uncertainty of the density value is ±0.15 kg/m3 at k=2. However our accredited Calibration and Measurement Capability (cmc) is ±0.1 kg/m3 at k=2 and, if necessary, we can calibrate floats with this uncertainty. • Recalibration service available for both our own floats and floats made by other manufacturers.

[b]Density Gradient Column Filler[/b] Density Gradient Columns are used widely in both industry and research to determine the density of solid samples, especially those that are too small to be measured using pyknometry or hydrostatic weighing. The accuracy of a density gradient column is dependent on a number of factors; the length of the column, the density range that the column spans, and the quality of the calibration. It is also necessary for the liquid in the column to be stable and to have an accurate gradient. H&D Fitzgerald have developed a micro-processor controlled column filler. This instrument overcomes the problems associated with ‘hand-filling’ columns by replacing the often inaccurate and extremely time consuming methods previously used. [b]Features[/b] • Microprocessor-controlled. • Fully automated. • Fast, accurate, and repeatable building of density gradient columns. • Program controlled top and bottom densities, column volumes and buffer volumes. • Leaves the technician free to undertake other duties. • Use any two miscible liquids. • Re-usable gradients, as the previous column setting is stored. • Selectable density units, using either g/ml or kg/m[sup]3[/sup]. • Provides an integrated solution for solid density measurement when used in conjunction with our UKAS calibrated floats. ‘Measurement mode’ allows the user the calculate the density of any sample placed in the column. [b]Certified Reference Materials for Liquid Density[/b] We produce Liquid Density Standards which are calibrated under our ISO 17025 accreditation. These are supplied in sealed glass ampoules which hold around 10ml, and come complete with their calibration certificates. These Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) are linked to recognised national standards of mass, pressure and temperature, and provide an effective route to traceable calibration for all types of laboratory density meter. We produce a range of standards to meet the requirements of a wide variety of industries and applications. The calibration certificate supplied with each ampoule shows the densities determined by hydrostatic weighing for that particular batch of liquid. Some liquids are only calibrated at 20°C, others over a wide range of temperatures. We only supply liquids which have passed through the hydrostatic weighing system, thus ensuring that the standards are of the highest quality.
