This video summarizes a joint effort by the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) Environmental Laboratory (Vicksburg, MS), Brewer Science (Rolla, MO), and the Jordan Valley Innovation Center at Missouri State University (Springfield, MO) to inform public school students about STEM jobs, computer aided design (CAD), 3D printing, improved engineering design, nanotechnology, environmental sensors, and sustainable manufacturing.

The practice presented in this scientific operating procedure (SOP) is intended to measure weathering effects on the retention of nanomaterial properties. This scientific standard operating procedure (SOP), SOP-R-1, is a weathering test for nanomaterials and describes how to perform a weathering test to rate the damage in nanocomposites and other technologies where nanomaterials have been incorporated. The SOP allows the user flexibility when determining which weathering cycle to apply to the nanomaterial but always references the proper way to make changes according to existing standards.<br/><br/>Kevin Torres-Cancel, Robert D. Sample preparation of nanomaterials for the X-Ray Defractometer (XRD) microscope

This protocol outlines how to prepare nano-sized materials for examination using electron microscopy with emphasis on particle size analysis. The type of sample preparation is dependent on the type of material. The protocol subdivides techniques for preparation of wet and dry samples, as well as conductive vs. nonconductive samples.

Sample Preparation of Nano-sized Materials for Scanning or Transmission Electron Microscopy

The USACE-CHL Particle Tracking Model (PTM) is used to predict transport of sediments in harbors and will be calibrated and parameterized to model the transport of (nano)materials to estimate environmental concentrations of nanoparticles from point sources (e.g., manufacturing discharges, weathering and release) and non-point discharges (e.g., spills, run-off). In this hypothetical scenario, TiO2 release from a catastrophic run-off event during construction of a marina using photocatalyic cement is modeled after a rain event (assuming no erosion controls). The video to the bottom left models TiO2 particle transport from two different point sources. The video to the bottom right models TiO2 concentrations. 

Particle Tracking Model Demonstration (nano-TiO2)

This video demonstrates how an environmental health and safety assessment of nanomaterials or a nano-enabled technology would be designed and documented using the NanoGRID tool.  NanoGRID stands for Nano Guidance for Risk Informed Deployment of nanomaterials.  The intention is to design and conduct logical, relevant and resource limited studies where data are needed to meet regulatory requirements.  The tool connects to published methods, where testing is recommended.  The intention is for the tool to be released for download in early 2017.
