Oliver Chadwick from the Department for Transport puts the issues surrounding biofuels into perspective. His talk explains the current landscape for fossil fuels and biofuels in the UK as well as UK and government targets.

Professor Rod Scott from the University of Bath discusses the potential for growing microalgae to create biofuels. He starts by putting into perspective the immense scale of the problem with regards to decreasing our dependence on fossil fuels. He then goes onto discuss various processes for converting algae into useful transport fuel and the problems associated. Finally he discusses his work using large scale bioreactors and open pond systems to grow algae.

Dr Michele Stanley from the Scottish Association of Marine Sciences discusses the potential for farming macroalgae (seaweed) for use in biofuel production.

Dr Andrew Spicer, scientific director of Algenuity gives an industry perspective of algae research and how this relates to biofuels. Algenuity is a company that provides support services to the emerging algal fuel industry. Andrew discusses current algae industries, including biofuel production and high value algae products.

Duncan Eggar, Bioenergy Champion for the BBSRC, gives us his views on algae biofuel research. He urges scientists to be realistic about their research goals and not to over promise.
